Sharing a File That's Already Password Protected (Like a ZIP)

Sometimes a file already has its own password before it's even uploaded, a locked ZIP archive, for instance. Does it still need a password on the share link too?

Two Different Layers

A password-protected ZIP secures the contents once someone has the file. A password on the share link controls who can get the file in the first place. They're solving two separate problems.

Is Doubling Up Overkill?

Not really, it's more like a second lock on the same door. For anything genuinely sensitive, having both isn't excessive, it just closes two different gaps instead of one.

The Practical Downside

The main tradeoff is convenience, the recipient now needs two separate pieces of information instead of one. For that reason, double-protecting everything isn't necessary, it's worth reserving for files where the extra step is actually justified.

A Reasonable Default

For routine files, one layer of protection, whichever's easier for you to apply, is usually enough. Save the double lock for the files that would genuinely cause a problem if they ended up in the wrong hands.
