Why Some Files Take Longer to Upload Than Others

Two files of similar size can sometimes take noticeably different amounts of time to upload. A few factors explain why, beyond just raw file size.

Your Connection Speed

Upload speed and download speed aren't always the same on a given connection, plenty of connections are faster at downloading than uploading, which can make uploads feel slower than expected.

File Type Matters Too

Some file types are already compressed (like most video and image formats), while others aren't. How compressed a file already is can affect how it moves through the upload process.

Server Load

Uploading during a busy period can be marginally slower than a quiet one, though this effect is usually small compared to connection speed.

What You Can Actually Control

A stable, ideally wired connection makes the biggest difference. Beyond that, compressing an especially large file before uploading is usually the most effective way to speed things up.
